What TMS Therapy is, and how it works

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) uses gentle magnetic pulses to activate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. These are the same regions that tend to underperform in major depressive disorder.

During treatment you sit in a chair, awake and alert, while a cushioned coil rests against your scalp. You can read, listen to music, or just rest. It's FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder and is performed right here in our office. No hospital, no anesthesia. Targeted specifically for a non-drug, non-medication, brain stimulation, as a stand alone treatment or to fit into your existing treatment or alongside your existing medication.

Is TMS Therapy right for you?

TMS may be a fit if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder
  • Haven't gotten enough relief from antidepressant medication
  • Want an option without the systemic side effects of medication

TMS isn't for everyone. It's not used if you have metal in or around the head (like aneurysm clips or cochlear implants). A history of seizures doesn't automatically rule it out, but it's something to discuss with your provider. The fastest way to know: book a consultation and we'll review your history together.

What to Expect

A typical course is five sessions a week for four to six weeks. Most providers will recommend about 36 sessions. Each session is about 20 minutes and there's no downtime.

Most patients go straight back to work or continue with their day. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort or headache during the first week, which usually fade as treatment continues. Serious side effects are rare. You'll meet with your care team regularly so we can track how you're responding and adjust if needed. A clinician is present in our office throughout treatment.

How TMS for depression compares to other types of treatments

No single treatment is right for everyone. We think TMS is one of the most effective solutions available with up to 82% of patients experiencing significant symptom relief and fewer long-term side effects. And when compared to traditional antidepressants, this medication-free, FDA-approved approach has fewer side effects.

Here’s how they differ on the things patients ask about most.

Our Cherry Hill team works closely with each patient to design a TMS therapy plan that fits.

Real results

This is not a leap of faith. It is a studied treatment with published results.

In an independent head-to-head study, 59.7% of patients treated with Deep TMS reached remission, meaning their depression symptoms were essentially gone. That is more than five times the remission rate of medication alone (11.1%).

In the large multicenter trial that led to FDA clearance of the Brainsway Deep TMS device, 38.4% of patients responded to treatment and 32.6% reached full remission, significantly higher than the sham group.

The benefits last. In 12-month follow-up data on the accelerated TMS protocol, fewer than 1 in 4 patients needed a medication change or another round of TMS.

Individual results vary, and your provider will walk through what these numbers mean for your situation.

When I called for a consultation, I didn't have much hope that I'd be able to get this treatment, due to my terrible insurance. Their coordinator busted her butt, and found a way to get me in. The people here want you to get better. They want to help you. My TMS treater is absolutely fantastic. The people at Success TMS know how to make you feel heard and understood. As for the treatment, I can say that it was absolutely worth the time commitment. Depression isn't the only mental illness I deal with, and I knew going into this that I would not walk out completely cured of everything that holds me back from a normal life. However, this treatment absolutely has done something positive for me. I have observed differences in how I respond to the world around me, as well as how my brain seems to process difficult situations. I would recommend this to anyone who suffers from depression, including the people I care most about. If you are suffering, and medications and therapy haven't helped you, try this. You deserve to feel better.

I am a 40 yr old women who has been living with major depressive disorder since the age of 16 (it is genetic), and have gone to therapists, been on about every different medication, you name it. I was very skeptic when I saw the ad for Success TMS on Instagram, but thought, "what do I have to lose?". I signed up for the program, not convinced it would do anything b/c it sounded too good to be true (seriously, no side effects and hope for remission???). Turns out, I had made the BEST decision ever... 3 weeks into the treatment sessions, I started to notice that I had an optimistic state of mind that I had never felt before. Even if I had a bad day, I was able to be in control and not let it bring me down like before. Before, my bad days would keep me in bed with no energy or motivation for anything - I was asking my family/friends if this was the way "normal" people felt, and said that if it was, then life is not as bad as I thought it was! I recently completed my treatment and feel better mentally than I have my entire life. I cannot thank Success TMS enough for this gift they've given me - to feel what life is like without depression! I will also say that even if the effects were to suddenly go away, I'd still consider this a complete success, b/c I've seen the other side. I am forever grateful, and recommend this treatment to anyone who is eligible!

After having no success with 13 different medications, I did not have high expectations that this treatment would do a lot for me. However I was pleasantly surprised to see drastic results by the end of my 36th session. Overall the experience was very successful for me. The treatment was effective, and I had a great experience with the technicians that I saw daily - Melanie and Natalie. They gave great advice when I asked for it, and were completely professional while helping to create a personable and friendly environment. I would highly recommend Success TMS to anyone that has been struggling with mental health, and has not had any luck with medications.

So many good things to say, where do I start. First everyone there is friendly, everyone! Then from the moment I got in contact with them (my first consultation) the intake coordinator Christy was very helpful and sweet. I was nervous and had so many questions about the process, but she answered them all. When I first started the treatments, my technician Melanie Aizikovitz, who was very kind and gentle and always made me feel comfortable and relaxed during my sessions. The receptionist Natalie was also very nice. I also met the intake coordinator in person and she was just as sweet as she was on the phone. Everyone there made me feel like family. I am so grateful for the TMS Success CherryHill office! If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or PTSD, I highly recommend giving TMS a try. It has truly been life-changing for me. Thank you TMS Success! CherryHill TMS Success!

Yes. TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment, which means it’s safe to administer to patients. It’s also non-invasive.  Deep TMS treatment has been demonstrated in clinical trials and actual practice usage to be well-tolerated.

What is the best TMS therapy for depression?

Deep TMS is an advanced, noninvasive treatment developed by BrainsWay for alleviating symptoms of mental health conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Unlike traditional TMS, which uses a figure-8 coil to stimulate superficial brain regions, Deep TMS employs a patented H-Coil within a helmet apparatus to target deeper and broader brain structures associated with depression. This approach enhances the regulation of neural activity in areas implicated in MDD, potentially offering improved outcomes for patients.

What are transcranial magnetic stimulation side effects?

TMS therapy is a well-tolerated treatment for most patients, although it does not work for everyone. The most common side effects are temporary, mild pain or discomfort in the area of the treatment site, typically occurring within the first week of treatment. TMS side effects usually manifest as headaches in about half of patients treated with BrainsWay’s therapy. Those that have been reported are mild and generally diminish over the course of the treatment.

What insurance does Oasis accept?

All New Jersey-based and most major insurance providers, including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, cover both Spravato® and TMS for treatment-resistant depression when certain criteria are met.
