What TMS Therapy is, and how it works

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) uses gentle magnetic pulses to activate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. These are the same regions that tend to underperform in major depressive disorder.

During treatment you sit in a chair, awake and alert, while a cushioned coil rests against your scalp. You can read, listen to music, or just rest. It's FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder and is performed right here in our office. No hospital, no anesthesia. Targeted specifically for a non-drug, non-medication, brain stimulation, as a stand alone treatment or to fit into your existing treatment or alongside your existing medication.

Is TMS Therapy right for you?

TMS may be a fit if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder
  • Haven't gotten enough relief from antidepressant medication
  • Want an option without the systemic side effects of medication

TMS isn't for everyone. It's not used if you have metal in or around the head (like aneurysm clips or cochlear implants). A history of seizures doesn't automatically rule it out, but it's something to discuss with your provider. The fastest way to know: book a consultation and we'll review your history together.

What to Expect

A typical course is five sessions a week for four to six weeks. Most providers will recommend about 36 sessions. Each session is about 20 minutes and there's no downtime.

Most patients go straight back to work or continue with their day. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort or headache during the first week, which usually fade as treatment continues. Serious side effects are rare. You'll meet with your care team regularly so we can track how you're responding and adjust if needed. A clinician is present in our office throughout treatment.

How TMS for depression compares to other types of treatments

No single treatment is right for everyone. We think TMS is one of the most effective solutions available with up to 82% of patients experiencing significant symptom relief and fewer long-term side effects. And when compared to traditional antidepressants, this medication-free, FDA-approved approach has fewer side effects.

Here’s how they differ on the things patients ask about most.

Meet the team at our Fairfield office

Our Fairfield team works closely with each patient to design a TMS therapy plan that fits.

Real results

This is not a leap of faith. It is a studied treatment with published results.

In an independent head-to-head study, 59.7% of patients treated with Deep TMS reached remission, meaning their depression symptoms were essentially gone. That is more than five times the remission rate of medication alone (11.1%).

In the large multicenter trial that led to FDA clearance of the Brainsway Deep TMS device, 38.4% of patients responded to treatment and 32.6% reached full remission, significantly higher than the sham group.

The benefits last. In 12-month follow-up data on the accelerated TMS protocol, fewer than 1 in 4 patients needed a medication change or another round of TMS.

Individual results vary, and your provider will walk through what these numbers mean for your situation.

Success TMS has changed my life emotionally for myself and my growing family. I came back for my 3rd round bc I just had a baby and Post Postpartum hit me twice after having her. My first treatment changed me to a new person I was social, happy and had no anxiety. When I became pregnant I seeked help because I saw Post Partpardum sneek back into my life. Ugh. I went to Paramus and saw Samuel O. he helped me so much. This time I saw Dr. Leory for my third time he was a great listener and I saw he wanted to help through my depression. It’s a Journey with my post postpartum. I did my intake in paramus and since Fairfield was 10min up the road from me I decided to do my treatments there. My treater was Noel he was very professional, punctual, humbling and compassionate while I was in treatment he helped me so much. I really appreciated that I was treated kindly and was understood through out my 6 weeks. The other treaters Shannon, Shamira were amazing too they were compassionate and guided me for sucess everyday I was in this locations. I highly recommend if your struggling with depression and anxiety to give this place a chance because it has helped me tuck away my anxiety and work through it.

I went to Success TMS after still feeling symptoms of depression after being on 3 antidepressants for about 1 year. The staff Sam the (neuroscientist), Shannon and Noel (treaters) who both treated me were so helpful during my treatment. The initial consultation and mini evaluation with Sam was great. He thoroughly explained the process to us and welcomed my Mom and I like we were friends or family. The staff always worked to accompany me over the 7 week treatment plan and worked with me to change appointment times when I needed. I would highly recommend this treatment for depression as a non invasive and non drug treatment.

I recently completed 36 sessions of TMS treatments at Oasis Mental Health Center in Fairfield, and I can confidently say this was one of the most supportive and healing experiences I have ever had. As someone who has struggled with treatment resistant depression, the environment and the people you meet during treatment truly matter, and this team is exceptional. Sabina is vibrant, energetic, and always greets you with a beautiful smile. Her positive aura lifts your mood the moment you walk in. She is very attentive, and during treatment she makes sure you are completely comfortable, always checking in and adjusting the helmet if needed. The 20 minutes would fly by because she communicates so naturally and makes the whole experience feel easy and comforting. Noel has an incredibly calm and peaceful personality. He creates an environment where you immediately feel safe and relaxed. He is always on top of things, whether it is adjusting the helmet, checking on discomfort, or putting on music to help you settle in. He has a great ability to sense what the patient needs. If you want to talk, he is there. If you want quiet, he gives you space. His calm energy is exactly what you hope for during treatment. Sam radiates peace the moment you see her. She has a gentle smile and is an amazing listener. You can talk to her for hours and she listens with genuine care. She offers thoughtful insights when you need them most, and her presence feels very therapeutic. Sometimes simply being heard makes all the difference, and she provides that in a very natural way. Susie is always available for any questions or concerns. She is knowledgeable, supportive, and consistently makes sure that you feel informed and comfortable throughout the process. One of the most thoughtful gestures is that they give you a certificate of completion at the end of your treatment. It is a wonderful reminder of your consistency and strength. Receiving it gives you a sense of pride and confidence inside. I will definitely be returning to this location for booster sessions next year. If you are considering TMS for treatment resistant depression, I highly recommend the Oasis Fairfield location. This team truly cares and they are exceptional at what they do. I feel incredibly lucky to have found them. Thank you to Sabina, Noel, Sam, Susie, and the entire team for making this journey so meaningful.

I started my treatment in March 2022 and I had Laticia as my TMS technician every morning. She was great! She made my experience very relaxing and comfortable every morning. I'm not gonna lie, I'm going to miss it! Today is my last treatment and it's very bittersweet. The staff is very kind and accommodating. You'll definitely be in good hands at the Fairfield location :)

Yes. TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment, which means it’s safe to administer to patients. It’s also non-invasive.  Deep TMS treatment has been demonstrated in clinical trials and actual practice usage to be well-tolerated.

What is the best TMS therapy for depression?

Deep TMS is an advanced, noninvasive treatment developed by BrainsWay for alleviating symptoms of mental health conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Unlike traditional TMS, which uses a figure-8 coil to stimulate superficial brain regions, Deep TMS employs a patented H-Coil within a helmet apparatus to target deeper and broader brain structures associated with depression. This approach enhances the regulation of neural activity in areas implicated in MDD, potentially offering improved outcomes for patients.

What are transcranial magnetic stimulation side effects?

TMS therapy is a well-tolerated treatment for most patients, although it does not work for everyone. The most common side effects are temporary, mild pain or discomfort in the area of the treatment site, typically occurring within the first week of treatment. TMS side effects usually manifest as headaches in about half of patients treated with BrainsWay’s therapy. Those that have been reported are mild and generally diminish over the course of the treatment.

What insurance does Oasis accept?

All New Jersey-based and most major insurance providers, including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, cover both Spravato® and TMS for treatment-resistant depression when certain criteria are met. Coverage varies by plan and medical necessity requirements.

Do I need a referral?
